History

The idea for the establishment of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak was mooted by Datuk Hassan Harun, the former chairman of KUB Malaysia Berhad. His strong interest and vast experience in the field of education materialised with the setting up of Maktab Adabi, in 1969. From this humble beginning, he continued to work on his vision for a bumiputra-owned private university.
With the advent of the IT age, Datuk Hassan incorporated the idea of an IT-based learning environment. His working paper was presented to the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in 1996. After deliberating on the proposal, the Prime Minister gave his blessing. This proposal was then presented to YB. Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, who was then the Minister of Education.
Dato' Sri Mohd Najib and members of the late Tun Abdul Razak's family were agreeable to the establishment of the university and also the use of Tun Abdul Razak's name for the university. The name is significant as Tun Abdul Razak is also known as the Father of Development, and the university aspires to actively contribute to the development efforts of the nation.
Universiti Tun Abdul Razak was launched on the 21st of December, 1998. Its establishment was of great significance, as it is part of a larger national agenda to liberate and democratise education in the country.
On 1st March 2007, Tun Abdul Razak Education Foundation (Yayasan PINTAR) purchased shares of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak Sdn. Bhd. from KUB Malaysia Berhad.

Background

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak was established on 18th December 1997, as one of the first private universities in Malaysia. Named after Malaysia's second Prime Minister, the late YAB. Tun Abdul Razak, the university welcomed its first batch of 162 students in September 1998. On 21st December 1998, the university was officially launched by Tun Abdul Razak's eldest son, the then Minister of Education YB. Dato' Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak.
Since then, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak has become one of the first private learning institutions in Malaysia to receive the SIRIM certification of ISO 9001:2000. Additionally, the university has been awarded the prestigious MSC-status certification, which is a testament to the university's commitment in integrating technology and innovation in its teaching and learning techniques.

It is evident in that although Universiti Tun Abdul Razak is a relatively new university, it is rapidly establishing itself as a centre for education. It views its responsibility of shaping the minds of the young and the intellectual leaders of tomorrow very seriously. In its effort to produce competitive and capable graduates, the university constantly upgrades its syllabus in accordance to current industry standards. The university also implements innovative teaching methods to provide the best education possibilities for its students.

While Universiti Tun Abdul Razak aspires to render services of the highest quality, it is also highly accessible to the community. Its PINTAR campus in Kelana Jaya, for example, is just 30 minutes away from the city of Kuala Lumpur and 45 minutes away from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The Razak Campus is strategically located in between the Golden Triangle and the Central Business District right in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. These strategic locations ensure that our students have easy access to various public transportation systems to and from both our campuses.
With more than 8,000 students studying in 42 academic programmes at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the university prides itself in developing relevant programmes to meet today's needs. All our academic programmes, which were developed through close consultation with business and industry partners, the public sector and professionals, are approved by the Malaysian Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) and are developed to meet the high standards required by the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).
Presently under the auspices of the Tun Abdul Razak Educational Foundation (Yayasan PINTAR), Universiti Tun Abdul Razak is embarking on the next crucial phase of its growth. Its new vision is to become the leading institution in providing quality education and human capital in niche areas or body of knowledge among emerging economies . Universiti Tun Abdul Razak also intends to enhance its cooperation and collaborative networks through strategic alliances with top-ranking international universities, renowned in their respective fields.
In executing these plans, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak hopes to further boost its presence in the global education market, and at the same time, offer its students a higher quality of educational experience. By continuously striving for excellence, the university is well on its way in becoming an important educational institution in this country and the region. By delivering a world-class learning experience, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak aspires to be an institution that produces great thinkers who will become the accomplished leaders of tomorrow.
